Summary:
M. Marcellin, le meilleur homme qui soit, était recteur de Val-Saint-Vincent et ami de Redon, le premier adjoint du maire. Les mauvaises langues l’accusent de voir sa femme. Redon eut un accident alors qu’il essayait d’éteindre le feu dans une maison et les mauvaises langues accusèrent le prêtre d’avoir voulu tuer son ami.
Condamné à mort, il jure de son innocence. Mais une heure avant de mourir, le vrai meurtrier est arrêté et alors que le prêtre était prêt à monter sur l’échafaud, juges et procureur le déclarent innocent.
